Christians worship a Jesus who was executed by the State. So how do we think about the death penalty?

Join us for our second Jesus & Justice gathering, where we’ll explore themes from the book You Shall Not Condemn: A Story of Faith and Advocacy on Death Row, Dr. Jennifer McBride’s gripping account of Kelly Gissendaner, the only woman on Georgia’s death row who developed a five-year correspondence with theologian Jurgen Moltmann after attending a class taught by the author. The book seamlessly weaves together Gissendaner’s story with a powerful theological case for abolishing the death penalty altogether.

We’ll gather together for appetizers and non-alcoholic beverages for the first part, then hear an executive summary of the book from the author Dr. Jennifer McBride before breaking off into table groups to discuss the book’s themes. No need to read the book beforehand.

– Date: July 20th
– Time: 6:30 – 8:00pm
– Location: Great Hall + Zoom
– Cost: None

RSVP preferred to Michele Steinke at msteinke@meetinghouse.church so we can plan for food.

What if naps were revolutionary?

Join us for our third and final Jesus & Justice gathering, where we’ll explore themes from Rest is Resistance: A Manifesto, a book by Tricia Hersey, the Nap Bishop and founder of the Nap Ministry. Hersey encourages readers to reclaim rest, not just as an added bonus to life, but as an essential ingredient to healing, justice, and resistance against the forces of capitalism, white supremacy, and hustle culture.

We’ll gather together for appetizers and non-alcoholic beverages for the first part, then hear an executive summary of the book from Rev. Dr. Christian Collins Winn before breaking off into table groups to discuss the book’s themes. No need to read the book beforehand.

– Date: August 21st
– Time: 6:30 – 8:00pm
– Location: Great Hall + Zoom
– Cost: None
